been saving this as draft for ever without realising that i didn’t publish it….

Its only 08 Jan but I’m already counting down the days to graduation. Counting down with not necessarily happiness, but with a tinge of dread, regret, resent and maybe unwillingness. Yeah sure, I can’t wait for a fresh start but to be honest I don’t really want to leave cedar, as screwed up as it sounds. Because I know some friendships that i hold dear to my heart will slip beneath my fingers sometime soon. In this crazy rat-race to get to the top, you forget other things as you try to remember your formulas and facts. And the ‘other things’ might be a simple catching-up session with friends, a couple of birthdays, or even a smile and wave when you walk past friends. As little as these ‘other things’ may seem, they will grow and accumulate into a big thing - drifting apart.

Education is important, I get it. 10A1s and 6points are of massive importance too, that I agree. But surely one can spare some time to prevent losing a friendship, a lunch buddy, someone to talk to? I know it’s a bit too early in the year to make assumptions and decisions, but I’m pretty sure some of us will lose ourselves and drown in textbooks to chase that dream, that Singaporean ‘Top 5 Junior College’ dream, and shut ourselves off completely from the outside world. They start by isolating themselves, not even the occasional text, talking about studies and exams twenty-four seven, refusing to share notes, and soon they cut you off completely. And by the time October’s long and gone, they’ll realize that it’s too late to make amends and salvage what’s left of their friendships. Because after O’s it’s separation time and everyone moves off in different directions.

So this year, this academically-challenging, stress-inducing year, I’m gonna make it a point to catch up with as many people as possible. A study date, a quick froyo treat, a chat in the canteen - they may be little things but hey, little things add up to big things that add up to bigger things that ends up being important things. And those friends are important to me. Face it, things will change. It’s hard to stay tight with friends in different schools so before I even get there, I’m gonna make the best out of it in my last year in Cedar. It doesn’t mean that I should just socialize all the time and neglect my studies, but hey, everyone’s born to be somewhat of a multitasker. And i’m gonna make memories while kicking ass and getting my <10points. (If all goes well, insyaallah!)
